 Counselling

Part of the range of support services available at City College includes a counselling service that aims to ensure that all students that may experience personal difficulties have access to independent counselling. The counselling service is accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Our counsellors are Brenda Varney, Jenny Hole, and Jan Harper.  They are based in Student Services.

Students who have used the service have said:

‘It’s a great service and has made a huge difference’

‘I felt so sad when my grandmother died. Talking about things really helped’

‘Counselling helped me to think about my choices’

‘Talking about my problems was useful, things are much better’

‘Talking about my ‘secret’ made life easier’

The information below is designed to answer some of the questions you may have about the service.

What will counselling offer me?

Counselling is an opportunity for you to talk through problems or issues that may be concerning you. Counselling gives you time and space, in a supportive environment, to identify changes or solutions that are right for you.

How do I know counselling is for me?

By making an initial appointment and talking with any of  the college counsellors. This first meeting is an opportunity for you to find out more about the service and to discuss with the counsellors whether it is suitable for you. The Counselling Service also has information about local services and, for some students, this may be more appropriate.

How do I make an appointment?

Call into Student Services or telephone 024 7679 1561 to arrange an appointment.

What about confidentiality?

Confidentiality will be discussed during your initial meeting. The service is confidential within the college. However, if you or someone else may be at risk of serious harm, information could be shared. If you are concerned about this discuss this further with any of the counsellors.

Is there a charge for the service?

No, the service is free to students at City College.

What if I’m not sure counselling can help?

We would encourage you to make an appointment to find out if it can. The first appointment is your opportunity to find out more and ask any questions you may have.

What sort of things can counselling help with?

Students have found counselling helpful with many issues. Life can be challenging at times and students may experience unexpected difficulties or anxieties. For some students issues may be more specific for example, relationship difficulties, bereavement, depression or concerns regarding drugs, alcohol or food.

How long does a counselling appointment last?

Counselling appointments usually last 50 minutes, although sessions can be shorter if that is more convenient.

How many counselling sessions are offered?

As many as you need, every situation is unique. The length of time counsellors and students work together varies. Some students find one or two sessions helpful other students may require longer support. Usually a number of sessions are agreed initially and reviewed on a regular basis.
