Students take centre stage at the Kasbah

First year National Diploma in Music (Performance) students from City College Coventry are hosting a gig that is taking place at one of Coventry's leading live music venues, the Kasbah. The gig will take place on Tuesday 16th March where the doors will open from 7.30pm and the first band will be on stage from 8.00pm.

Tickets are being sold in advance around City College Coventry for a reduced price of £1.50 and the cost will be £3 to buy them on the door on the night of the gig. Derrin Ansell agrees that this is a great opportunity for herself and the other students on the course "Playing on a stage where some major acts like Bullet for My Valentine have played is quite an achievement. I'm positive that after all the hard work we have put into this gig we will be able to impress the crowd and really prove that we deserve to be on that stage".

The gig will be taking place in the side room of the Kasbah and will be used towards the students' final music project, so they will be assessed on the event. They will be playing mostly original songs, which they have written and produced themselves, however they plan to do a few covers which will include artists such as 'Journey' and 'Maroon 5'. Lady Fiesty believes it will be a really good experience for all of the students "I'm looking forward to working with a live band which I've never done before, especially at such a major venue. It's a great experience for me and for everyone else on the course and I'm really excited about showing the audience a good mix of genres by bringing rock and hip hop together. There's not really anything else like my music out there so it will be interesting to see the crowd's reaction".

The night will include many different genres of music including rock and roll, reggae, contemporary hip hop and some acoustic songs. Stephen Bennett, one of the students involved in the event, spoke about why this gig stands out from anything else "There are lots of people from lots of different musical backgrounds involved in this event so there's a really good blend of talent taking part, which works well. I've enjoyed seeing how different people work together and think the audience will really feel the impact of seeing all the different types of music in one show".

The students are responsible for organising the event and will have to take on the challenge of organising fundraisers to pay for the hire of the Kasbah. They will each have a role assigned to them in preparation for the gig as they must produce the tickets and arrange for them to be sold. They will also have to take on individual roles as well as performing on the night, some students will be checking tickets on the door while others will be the compere to introduce the different acts on stage and also ensure the night runs smoothly.

John Shepherd, one of the music performance lecturers, spoke about why the gig was such an important thing to be involved in "It's an excellent opportunity for the students to experience the process of hosting and staging a gig at one of Coventry's premier live performance venues. It draws together a lot of disciplines they study throughout the course including aspects of performance, composing and music industry knowledge. It will be a real buzz for them to experience the atmosphere of a live performance."

People under the age of 18 will be allowed into the venue, there will be a bar open which will serve drinks all night but ID must be shown.

Sports Leadership Students Take Control

15 City College Coventry students led the way as they took over from the teachers and taught a P.E. lesson to young children from St Mary & Benedicts Primary School.

The students from the college are taking part in the Sports Leaders UK Award, where they use the medium of sport to learn to lead. They learn the essential skills of leadership, which involves communication, organisation and motivation, as well as growing in confidence and self belief. Everything they learn from taking part in the award can be used later on in life when they start a career, and gives them a purposeful role within their community.

Craig Pritchard, who is a student involved in the award, explains why he is finding the course so interesting: "It's been great to be given the opportunity to do the Sports Leadership Award. I also coach the college basketball team, so it is good experience for me to work with children who are a lot younger. It means I'm getting to practice a range of different teaching skills, which will help to develop my coaching style."

75 young students from St Mary & Benedicts Primary School attended the class and there have been more sessions arranged with the school, as all of the children left with smiles on their faces and everyone agreed that it was a great accomplishment for all of the students. Melanie Lovelock, a teacher from the local primary school showed her appreciation for the City College Coventry students and the lesson they gave: "We would like to say thank you for the opportunity to boost sports sessions for our Year 5 and 6 pupils. The sports sessions that you have organised have been an invaluable experience: the children interact with young adults whilst participating in a variety of sports. It has allowed the children to work with positive role models in further education. The children have enjoyed the sessions as they were short, sharp and extremely focused. It has highlighted to the children that exercise doesn't have to be a chore - it can be fun. The students built up a rapport with the children which made them enthusiastic to return and has helped promote lifestyle changes and team building skills."

Course organiser, Lizzie Farquhar, agreed that these classes are important to both the college students and the primary school children: "It teaches the students independence, respect and discipline. They are responsible for producing their own lesson plan and taking this to the students from a local primary school. It is their job to interest the young children while being able to complete the aim of the session. I believe our students have achieved this today and the lesson has been a great success."

It’s Bonjour Paris for the College Hairdressers

City College Coventry NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing Students are heading for Paris as they visit the world famous 'Wella' salon.

Whilst there, the 10 students will attend a seminar hosted by the Wella Paris Studio Creative Team, where they will experience a first class presentation with live demonstrations. It will showcase the very latest in up to the minute techniques in cutting and colouring. The students are being given the opportunity to see 3 models, have a complete cut and colour live on stage, and observe the different techniques that are used in creating new and exciting styles. The seminar will last about 3 hours and all students will receive a 'Wella Diploma' at the end of the session. All the students are very excited about the visit and one of the students, Kate Baldwin, explains why the trip is so important: "Going to Paris will give us the opportunity to study and learn new techniques that are used over in France. It will be interesting to see how they develop through their hairdressing styles and I’m definitely expecting to be inspired by their different designs."

Hairdressing Lecturer, Paz Bamrolia, believes that it will be good for the students to experience another major city and to see how another culture works, which will further their creative thinking: "This trip is going to be an amazing experience for the students. They will get to see different backgrounds and cultures and watch how that influences people's work. Hairdressing is such a big field, that involves fashion, beauty and photography as well, and the students will get a lot out of seeing all 4 aspects of the industry put together, especially after having just studied Paris Fashion Week and the use of different hair designs on the catwalk."

The students are in Paris for a total of 3 days and are looking forward to putting the ideas they will get from the trip into practice when they come back to college.
