Bringing theory to life

Faced with an assignment on the history of hot and cold stone therapy, City College students had theory brought to life when they learnt about the treatment directly from the person responsible for bringing it to the UK from America.

Stratford-based Jane Scrivner, who is acknowledged as the UK's expert on hot and cold stone therapy and has written two books on the subject, addressed the Level 3 Beauty Therapy students on the afternoon of the 18th January. She told the students about her discovery of the therapy and the way she has turned her expertise into a thriving business.

Jane has spent 18 years working in the skincare and therapy industry. During her travels, which have taken her from Chile to China, Australia to Austria and Switzerland to France, she has learnt many therapies and found all sorts of products that she has developed in her own business.

"It's an amazing opportunity for the students to meet the person responsible for introducing this therapy to the UK," explained Ann Oakley, course tutor at City College Coventry. "With Jane based so close to the college we were determined to arrange the session and give the students something extra."

"Jane's travels and approach really inspired the students, and as well as a deeper knowledge of this treatment, they heard from one of the UK's most successful entrepreneurs in the skincare and therapy industry, giving them a true insight into how they might carve a successful career in the industry."

Hot and cold stone therapy is a massage using heated volcanic basalt and cooled stones of varying sizes. The massage is particularly deep and leaves the recipient feeling extremely relaxed and balanced.

Sky Blues fans treated to something a little different

Thirty performing arts students from City College Coventry took to the pitch and got the fans cheering before the Sky Blues took on Middlesbrough at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday, January 21st.
"It was a fantastic performance in the build-up to the game," explained Trudi Colledge, Commercial Accounts Manager at Coventry City Football Club. "The students took to the 'stage' brilliantly and got everyone cheering and clapping ready for the team to come onto the pitch."

Guided by their tutor Natalie Haywood, the students choreographed the dance specifically for this performance.  "We've danced in all sorts of places but never somewhere like the centre of the Ricoh Arena!  The choreography had to be big and bold to make an impact. I think we got it right and judging by the response, so did the crowd," explained Natalie.

"This sort of opportunity is a wonderful experience for the students, particularly those whose ambition is a career in dance and the performing arts," explained City College's principal, Paul Taylor.

"We sponsored the match to give our students the chance to stretch themselves and to support the Sky Blues, who have a platform for promoting Coventry throughout the country."

Sports students also made the most of this opportunity, working at the turnstiles, telling everyone about the College's open evening on 1 February while handing out masks of defender Richard Keogh, and Gary McSheffrey, who scored the first goal in the 3-1 victory.
City College also handed out balloons in the Junior Sky Blues section, and Charterhouse Training, the College's corporate training arm, promoted its activities in the corporate area.

Young people who want opportunities like this can visit City College at the next Year 11 Open Evening on 1 February.  A similar event last November was the biggest yet with more enrolling on the evening than ever before.  It makes sense to book it in your diary now.
City College also took the opportunity to reward its ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) team, for its continuing outstanding performance, giving them the opportunity to make the most of the corporate hospitality.

City College backing Coventry Blaze

City College Coventry sponsorship of Coventry Blaze on Sunday 18th December 2011 was a tremendous success.

College students added some special extras to the evening. Pre-match and during intervals our music students performed in Crosbies Bar. At the start of the match one of our students sang the National Anthem, and during the first break our performing arts students presented a five-minute choreographed dance routine, specifically for the occasion.   Our sports students were on hand to help out and of course to watch the match!

"We are delighted to be supporting Coventry Blaze" said Principal of City College, Paul Taylor, who took part in festive games on the ice in the interval.  "For twelve years Coventry Blaze has been a huge part of the community and, like many others, they have been affected by the continuing difficult economic environment.  December is Blaze Action Month and we are pleased to be doing a little to support an organisation that has, amongst other things, flown the city's flag internationally."

Paul added, "What a great night! Not only was it a resounding success for the College but the Blaze trounced the Capitals 7-2 in a thrilling match".

Student Success - Children in Need

Second Year Students on the BTEC National Diploma in Business raised a fantastic £328.69 for Children in Need.

The students split into 3 teams and toured around the college armed with chocolate and lollipops which they exchanged for a donation.

Much fun was had by all, thanks to all our generous staff and students who made a donation.

Student warms up for Jackass's Steve-O

Former City College student Dean Ingram is taking on his biggest gig yet when he appears as a warm up for Jackass's Steve-O on Friday 28 Oct.

The 27 year old music production students will perform in front of more than 1,000 people at Coventry's Kasbah club ahead of prankster Steve-O's stand-up and stunt show.

Dean said "I am incredibly excited about this opportunity.  I'll be in amazing company, playing to a huge crowd and intend to make sure I get everything I possible can from it.

"I worked in a range of different factories around Coventry for about 10 years, repeatedly being made redundant as one after the other cut back or close.  " Music was always my passion and then I saw an advertisement in the paper for the course at City College and it seemed like a natural step."

Dean, whose music has a hip hop influence, has been compared to Alex Turner of the Artic Monkeys.  He is gearing up to release his new album on iTunes.
