The Apprenticeship in Light Vehicle is designed for young people who are interested in working within the retail motor industry in vehicle maintenance and repair. An apprenticeship usually takes between two to four years to complete, depending on the needs of the employer and the apprentice.
Entry Requirements
To gain employment as an Apprentice (Level 2) you should have GCSE grades D, preferably in Mathematics and English.
To gain employment as an Advanced Apprentice (Level 3), you will need 3 GCSE grades A to C, preferably including Mathematics.
What is included in an Apprenticeship Programme?
Apprentices in Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair work towards frameworks designed by the Motor Industry Training Board.
Apprentices are required to study the following:
Level 2 Apprenticeships
- NVQ Level 2
- Technical Certificate - Progression Award in Automotive Vehicle Servicing & Repair
- Key Skills
- I.T. - Level 1
- Application of Number - Level 1
- Communication - Level 1
Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeships
- NVQ Level 3
- Technical Certificate - Progression Award in Automotive Vehicle Servicing & Repair

- Communication - Level 2
The vehicle maintenance & repair programme includes the removal & refitting of components and fault diagnosis. The vehicle body repair programme includes the removal & refitting of non-structural panels, body repair and the application of foundation materials.
Employment
Most apprentices are employed. However, it is possible to enrol on a vocational course at College during which the College will try to help you gain employment as an apprentice.
In summary, there are two possible ways of gaining an apprenticeship;
a) Apply for an apprenticeship with an employer directly from school;
b) Enrol on the vocational course of your choice at College during which, the College will try to help you gain employment as an apprentice.
